Romi, muchas gracias por concedernos esta entrevista, es un placer.

Ha sido un año con mucha actividad para ti, has viajado recientemente por Sudamérica y constantemente te vemos muy activa en Los Ángeles, seguramente tienes muchas historias que compartir. Pero antes de entrar en esos temas, permítenos conocer un poco acerca de tus inicios. He notado que tienes experiencia como actriz, pero pláticanos ¿cómo te vinculaste con la escena de la danza y en particular con el Chicago footwork? 

Me vinculé con la danza alrededor del 2005/2006. Hice la primaria en el estado de Virginia y un año antes de mudarnos nuevamente a Uruguay, decidí que quería bailar hip hop. Creo haber estado muy influenciada por la cultura americana y por mis amigos de la escuela. Al mudarnos con mi familia a Uruguay, una transición muy difícil para mi, por temas familiares y cambio de país. Vi a mi tía en una escuela de comedia musical y decidí hacer lo mismo, en esa escuela estuve seis años actuando, cantando y bailando varios estilos además de hip hop con uno de los mejores profesores del momento de Uruguay. Además de estar en esa escuela, tomaba clases por fuera donde ese profesor diera. Lo seguía como patito a mamá pata (risas). Resumiendo, en el 2012 entré a la Crew de ese profesor, luego en 2014 esa Crew se disolvió y abrimos el primer Centro de danzas urbanas de Uruguay llamado Bit Bang. Siempre paralelamente estudiando actuación. Durante 2017 me di cuenta que del panel de profes/amigos de Bit Bang yo era la única que tenía la oportunidad de viajar a Estados Unidos y crecer ahí y ser puente para muchos de los estudiantes de Uruguay. En marzo de 2017 tomé el avión a Los Ángeles sin saber que iba a pasar, sin conocer a nadie, sola yo y mi pitbull Tas. Creo que a las 3 semanas de estar ahí fui a uno de los estudios de danza a ver si conocía a algún profesor y clase que estuviera buena. Y me encuentro con que King Charles daba clase de Chicago Footwork. Yo había visto uno o dos videos desde Uruguay, no sabía quién era él ni nada del estilo, solo sabía que el video que vi me gustó. Y así tomé mi primera clase enamorándome de la velocidad y música. No sólo eso, sino que King Charles, es una persona muy abierta y simpática con sus alumnos dispuesto a dar toda su información. Luego de la clase, Charles me invitó a la casa donde vivía con otros miembros de la Crew a ver videos y documentales de la cultura de Chicago Footwork. Así como si fuera mi destino comenzó mi trayectoria con el Chicago Footwork.

Romi, thank you very much for giving us this interview, it’s a pleasure.
 
It has been a busy year for you, you have recently traveled through South America and we are constantly seeing you in Los Angeles, you surely have many stories to share. But before getting into those issues, let us know a little about your beginnings. I have noticed that you have experience as an actress, but how did you connect with the dance scene and in particular with the Chicago footwork?

I linked with the dance around 2005/2006. I did elementary school in the state of Virginia and a year before moving back to Uruguay, I decided that I wanted to dance hip hop. I think I was very influenced by the American culture and by my friends from school. When moving with my family to Uruguay, a very difficult transition for me, for family issues and change of country. I saw my aunt in a musical comedy school and decided to do the same, in that school I was performing for six years, singing and dancing several styles besides hip hop with one of the best teachers of the time in Uruguay. Besides being in that school, I took classes outside where that teacher gave. I followed him like a little duck to her mommy (laughs). In short, in 2012 I joined the Crew of that teacher, then in 2014 that Crew was dissolved and we opened the first urban dance center in Uruguay called Bit Bang. Always in parallel studying acting. During 2017 I realized that from the panel of teachers / friends of Bit Bang I was the only one who had the opportunity to travel to the United States and grow there and be a bridge for many of the students of Uruguay. In March of 2017 I took the plane to Los Angeles without knowing what was going to happen, without knowing anyone, only me and my pit bull Tas. I think that after 3 weeks of being there I went to one of the dance studios to see if I knew any teacher and class that was good. And I find that King Charles taught Chicago Footwork. I had seen one or two videos from Uruguay, I did not know who he was or anything of the sort, I just knew that the video that I saw liked me. And so I took my first class falling in love with speed and music. Not only that, but King Charles is a very open and friendly person with his students willing to give all their information. After the class, Charles invited me to the house where he lived with other members of the Crew to watch videos and documentaries of the Chicago Footwork culture. As if it were my destiny, my career with the Chicago Footwork began.

¿Así que, ese fue tu primer contacto con la música juke/footwork?

Sí, mi primer contacto con la música juke fue durante mi primer clase con King Charles.

Pero el momento en el que entendí un poco más fue fuera del ámbito de la clase en un boliche llamado ‘Tokyo Beat’ al cual íbamos todos los martes en la noche al evento llamado ‘Rocksteady’ como ritual. Ahí no solo conocí a los deejays que llevan adelante la música juke/footwork en Los Ángeles, la Crew Juke Bounce Werk, sino que ellos mismos traían invitados directamente desde Chicago como por ejemplo RP Boo, entre otros.

So that was your first contact with juke/footwork music?

Yes, my first contact with juke music was during my first class with King Charles.

But the moment I understood a bit more was outside the scope of the class in a bowling called ‘Tokyo Beat’ which we went every Tuesday night to the event called ‘Rocksteady’ as a ritual. There I not only met the deejays that carry out the juke / footwork music in Los Angeles, the Crew Juke Bounce Werk, but they themselves brought guests directly from Chicago such as RP Boo, among others.

Formas parte de la familia Creation Global, ¿qué nos puedes compartir acerca de la historia que te llevó a formar parte de este gran Crew? 

Luego de la primera clase con Charles no paré de practicar, de ir a todas las clases, a todas las prácticas y ¡a todos los Tokyo Beats! Si no me equivoco, en junio se hizo la prueba para ver quien entraba a Creation, la prueba puede consistir de diferentes maneras, en mi caso fue, todos los que se querían unir a Creation de un lado, y los de Creation del otro y a batallar. Luego de la prueba dijeron quién entró y quién no y también quien quedó a prueba, yo en esa instancia quedé a prueba, ya que sólo tenía dos meses de estar entrenando y no nos conocíamos mucho. En agosto, hubo un evento, AFA (A Family Affair) donde se incorporó por primera vez en Los Ángeles 1vs1 batalla de Chicago Footwork. En ese momento estaba un poco lesionada del tobillo pero como pude participé, esa noche luego del evento, con varias personas de Chicago que viajaron para ir a este evento, me dijeron que entré a la Crew.

You are part of the Creation Global family, what can you share about the story that led you to be part of this great crew?

After the first class with Charles, do not stop practicing, go to all the classes, all the practices and all the Tokyo Beats! If I’m not mistaken, in June the test was done to see who entered Creation, the test may consist of different ways, in my case it was, all those who wanted to join Creation on one side, and those of Creation on the other. After the test they said who entered and who did not and also who was put to the test, in that instance I was on trial, since I only had two months of training and we did not know each other very much. In August, there was an event, AFA (A Family Affair) where he joined for the first time in Los Angeles 1vs1 Battle of Chicago Footwork. At that time I was a bit injured in the ankle but as I was able to participate, that night after the event, with several people from Chicago who traveled to this event, they told me that I entered the Crew.

Bit Bang es un centro de danzas urbanas en Montevideo, platícanos un poco acerca del Workshop que impartiste en tu tierra natal al lado de King Charles.

Como dicho anteriormente Bit Bang es el primer centro de danzas urbanas de Montevideo que abrió sus puertas en el 2014, los fundadores, directores y profesores son: Rodrigo Arias, Florencia Alfieri, Santiago Duarte, Gonzalo Tejera, Jonathan Estrada, Agustín Hirigoyen y yo. Siete bailarines con un sueño en común: hacer crecer las danzas urbanas en Uruguay. La idea del workshop salió con mi deseo de llevar más información no sólo a mi escuela sino a mi país y también a Sudamérica. Ya estando en la Crew me pareció que era el momento perfecto para organizar una gira de Chicago Footwork por Sudamérica. Una anécdota graciosa es que ¡Charles no había ido a Sudamérica hasta luego de conocerme! Antes de nuestra gira fue a Perú y Brasil. Al haber estado en el ambiente de danzas urbanas ya por muchos años en mi país y haber tenido la suerte de viajar mucho no solo por Sudamérica sino mundialmente, yendo a mucho de los eventos más grandes como Juste Debout, Street Star, Summer Dance Forever, Pura Calle entre otros. Y teniendo nuestro Centro en el cual estamos constantemente organizando eventos para hacer crecer la cultura, me sentía segura de poder organizar la gira de Chicago Footwork por Sudamérica. Me puse en contacto con referentes de cada país (Uruguay, Argentina, Brasil y Chile) y con ellos organizamos las actividades y lo necesario para el viaje. El workshop en Bit Bang y en Uruguay fue un sueño hecho realidad. Un sueño que no sabía que tenía. Ver a los alumnos felices y fascinados con un estilo nuevo me recordó que estoy transitando el camino que tengo que transitar. Y que es sólo el principio de algo inmenso.

Bit Bang is a center of urban dances in Montevideo

tell us a little about the Workshop that you taught in your native land next to King Charles.

As previously said Bit Bang is the first urban dance center in Montevideo that opened its doors in 2014, the founders, directors and teachers are: Rodrigo Arias, Florencia Alfieri, Santiago Duarte, Gonzalo Tejera, Jonathan Estrada, Agustín Hirigoyen and me. Seven dancers with a common dream: to grow urban dances in Uruguay. The idea of ​​the workshop came out with my desire to bring more information not only to my school but also to my country and also to South America. Already in the Crew I thought it was the perfect time to organize a Chicago Footwork tour of South America. A funny anecdote is that Charles had not gone to South America until after he met me! Before our tour he went to Peru and Brazil. Having been in the atmosphere of urban dances for many years in my country and having had the good fortune to travel a lot not only in South America but worldwide, going to many of the biggest events like Juste Debout, Street Star, Summer Dance Forever, Pure Street among others. And having our Center in which we are constantly organizing events to grow the culture, I felt sure of being able to organize the Chicago Footwork tour through South America. I got in touch with references from each country (Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Chile) and with them we organized the activities and what is necessary for the trip. The workshop in Bit Bang and in Uruguay was a dream come true. A dream that I did not know I had. Seeing the students happy and fascinated with a new style reminded me that I am transiting the path that I have to travel. And that is just the beginning of something immense.

Esta gira sudamericana los llevó a compartir con nuestros amigos de MakinMovs en Santiago de Chile, ¿qué nos puedes compartir acerca de esa visita? 

Chile fue hermoso, no sólo la gente y alumnos que tomaron la clase, sino poder documentar una entrevista fue una experiencia increíble e histórica para la cultura de footwork en Sudamérica. Chile y Sudamérica en general tiene un potencial increíble, todas las personas internacionales que conocí lo dicen y lo sienten, poder participar del crecimiento, me hace sentir muy afortunada, e inspirada para seguir aportando.

This South American tour led them to share with our friends from MakinMovs in Santiago de Chile, what can you share about that visit?

Chile was beautiful, not only the people and students who took the class, but being able to document an interview was an incredible and historic experience for footwork culture in South America. Chile and South America in general has incredible potential, all the international people I met say it and feel it, to participate in growth, it makes me feel very fortunate, and inspired to continue contributing.

Recientemente escuché un par de temas al lado de Neuropunk en tu cuenta de Soundcloud, ¿qué hay de tu actividad con la música, te interesa la producción o la realización de Dj set? 

Otro de los destinos de la vida. Nunca creí vincularme con la producción musical o con la experiencia de Dj. Juke Bounce Werk (Crew iniciada por Neuropunk, Dj Noir, Dj Drago y Sonic D) es una Crew que también llamo familia, increíbles artistas y personas, me integraron como una más, y me han enseñado casi todo lo que se de producción y dj, en especial Neuropunk. Personalmente me interesa más la producción solo por el hecho de que soy bailarina y en el boliche me explotan las ganas de bailar (risas). Pero aprender a ser Dj me abrió la mente y me hizo entender muchas cosas que aplico a mi footwork que antes no lo hacía porque no sabía, por ejemplo el simple hecho de cuando dos pistas se mezclan, hoy en día puedo identificar el momento exacto que se están mezclando cuando antes era todo una cosa sola. Todo gracias a haber practicado y experimentado con las tablas de dj. En cuanto a la producción quiero seguir aprendiendo y mejorando y poder llegar a un nivel alto en un futuro.

Recently I heard a couple of tracks next to Neuropunk in your Soundcloud account, what about your activity with music, are you interested in the production or the realization of Dj set?

Another of life’s destinations. I never thought I could connect with the musical production or with the DJ experience. Juke Bounce Werk (Crew founded by Neuropunk, Dj Noir, Dj Drago and Sonic D) is a Crew that I also call family, incredible artists and people, they integrated me as one more, and they have taught me almost everything that is produced and dj, especially Neuropunk. Personally, I am more interested in the production just because I am a dancer and in the bowling club I am exploited by the desire to dance (laughs). But learning to be a DJ opened my mind and made me understand many things that I apply to my footwork that I did not before because I did not know, for example the simple fact of when two tracks are mixed, nowadays I can identify the exact moment that they are mixing when before everything was a single thing. All thanks to having practiced and experimented with the DJ tables. In terms of production I want to continue learning and improving and to reach a high level in the future.

Hace unos días estuviste de visita en Chicago ¿es la primera vez que visitas Illinois? Cuéntanos un poco acerca de las actividades que realizaste por esas tierras. 

Sí, recién volví de mi segunda visita a Chicago, ciudad que nunca creí visitar. Mi primer visita fue en junio de este año 2018, a una batalla organizada por uno de los miembros de mi Crew, John ‘Boodilla’ King, la batalla lleva el nombre de ‘ROFT’ (Realm of Footwork Tournament) donde me inscribí a la 1vs1 y a la 2vs2 con otro compañero de Crew Eric ‘Tempo’ Bitoy, con quien nos llevamos el primer puesto. La segunda visita fue este fin de semana pasado 13 de agosto donde fue el aniversario número 17 de la Crew y todos los miembros de alrededor del mundo nos encontramos para celebrar en Chicago. Fue una experiencia increíble no solo el hecho de batallar a otras crews con el apoyo de toda tu Crew sino también conocer a muchos de los OG (originales) de la cultura de esta danza, los profesores de mis profesores. Que se acercaran a mí, mostrándome su respeto e interés en enseñarme para yo poder seguir creciendo. Fue muy inspirador, motivador y experiencias que sólo te agrandan en humildad.

A few days ago you were visiting Chicago. Is this the first time you visit Illinois? Tell us a little about the activities you did in these lands.

Yes, I recently returned from my second visit to Chicago, a city I never thought I would visit. My first visit was in June of this year 2018, to a battle organized by one of the members of my Crew, John ‘Boodilla’ King, the battle is called ‘ROFT’ (Realm of Footwork Tournament) where I registered to the 1vs1 and 2vs2 with another Crew teammate Eric ‘Tempo’ Bitoy, with whom we took the first place. The second visit was this past August 13th where it was the 17th anniversary of the Crew and all members from around the world met to celebrate in Chicago. It was an incredible experience not only the fact of battling other crews with the support of your whole Crew but also knowing many of the OG’s of the culture of this dance, the teachers of my teachers. That they would approach me, showing me their respect and interest in teaching me so that I could continue growing. It was very inspiring, motivating and experiences that only enlarge you in humility.

Es genial observar el empoderamiento y la presencia femenina en el Chicago footwork al interior de una escena que ha sido acaparada por hombres. El cortometraje I am the Queen es una muestra de lo que buscan compartir Kenesha “Murdamommy” Sheridan y Wills Glasspiegel acerca de estas historias de mujeres bailarinas. 

Cuéntanos ¿cómo te sientes al formar parte de la historia de este género de baile?  

Me siento privilegiada en formar parte de esta cultura y aportar para las mujeres, ya que es mayoritariamente una cultura masculina. Creo que las mujeres en todo ámbito aportan algo que solo los hombres no pueden y lo mismo viceversa, se necesita de ambos para que se logre su máximo potencial.

It is great to observe the empowerment and female presence in the Chicago footwork within a scene that has been monopolized by men. The short film I am the Queen is a sample of what Kenesha “Murdamommy” Sheridan and Wills Glasspiegel want to share about these stories of women dancers.

Tell us how do you feel to be part of the history of this dance genre?

I feel privileged to be part of this culture and to contribute for women, since it is mostly a male culture. I believe that women in all areas contribute something that only men can not and vice versa, it is necessary for both to achieve their maximum potential.

Personalmente me considero un absoluto novato del baile footwork, no obstante, intento aprender nuevos pasos y mantengo un ímpetu por desarrollar nuevos movimientos. Actualmente en México no contamos con una enseñanza o formación estricta apegada al Chicago footwork, es por esto que la familia Juke Mx mantenemos siempre abierta la invitación a nuestro país para que algún día compartas tu talento y conocimiento con nosotros. ¿Tienes planes de realizar nuevas giras en el futuro?

¡Por supuesto! ¡Sé que pronto estaré por ahí! Viajar es gran parte de mi vida, así que se que continuaré haciendo giras y viajando para seguir creciendo y compartiendo. Por lo que resta de este año quiero viajar lo más que pueda a Chicago para nutrirme de la raíz. Siempre abierta y dispuesta a nuevos proyectos y propuestas para seguir compartiendo.

Personally I consider myself an absolute rookie footwork dancer, however, I try to learn new steps and I maintain an impetus to develop new movements. Currently in Mexico we do not have a strict education or training attached to the Chicago footwork, that is why the Juke Mx family always keep open the invitation to our country so that some day you share your talent and knowledge with us. Do you have plans to make new tours in the future?

Of course! I know I’ll be around soon! Traveling is a big part of my life, so I know that I will continue touring and traveling to continue growing and sharing. For the remainder of this year I want to travel as much as I can to Chicago to nourish myself from the root. Always open and willing to new projects and proposals to continue sharing.
